Transnational Law: What’s in a Name? Launch Symposium of the Dickson Poon Transnational Law Institute

For those in London next week I am happy to pass along an announcement of the inauguration of a great new project with global impact--
The Transnational Law Institute at The Dickson Poon School of Law will celebrate its inauguration with a Symposium, Transnational Law: What’s in a Name? The Launch Symposium will feature short presentations by legal scholars and practitioners as well as anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists and historians to reflect on the origins and the current state of the debate around ‘transnational law’ as a field of doctrine, global legal practice and critical reflection about the role of law in governing border-crossing risks and challenges.

Presentations begin at 3:45 and, with an intermission, at 5:30, conclude at 7:15. A reception with music and drinks follows.

A list of speakers and the programme can be found here.
The inauguration promises to be an exciting event. My congratulations to Peer Zumbansen who joined The Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London in July 2014 as the inaugural Professor of Transnational Law and founding director of the Dickson Poon Transnational Law Institute.
The Dickson Poon Transnational Law Institute is made possible by the £20 million gift from Dr Dickson Poon CBE. With the support of this gift, The Dickson Poon School of Law is establishing itself as a global leader in transnational law – pioneering an approach to law that moves our thinking beyond national jurisdictions and academic boundaries to find new solutions to pressing global problems.  The remainder of the post includes the program for the conference and information about the TLI posted by Kings.

From the announcement:

About the Transnational Law Institute - Since opening its doors in September 2014, the Transnational Law Institute (TLI) has developed a number of programmes for students, faculty and affiliated researchers in London, the UK and around the world. A comprehensive, new Masters’ Degree in Transnational Law offers modules in both public and private transnational law with a strong emphasis on critical legal thinking and practice relevancy.

For the first time in 2015, the TLI hosted the new Transnational Law Summer Institute (TLSI), which welcomed advanced doctoral and early-career, post-doctoral scholars and teachers in law and the Humanities from more than 25 countries to London for two weeks of conceptual and career-training oriented workshops and seminars.

The TLI hosts the monthly Reading Laboratory, which has been welcoming students and faculty in London and beyond to discuss an important scholarly monograph, the Transnational Law Colloquium, at which eminent scholars present their work on the intersection between law and global governance and the Methods Lab, an interdisciplinary seminar on research and writing methods.

In December 2014, the TLI hosted the first London Roundtable on Transnational Private Law and, in January 2016, launched the Practitioners in the Hot Seat lecture series with experienced professionals in public international and transnational law giving insights into their work in international organisations.

In 2015, the TLI launched the King’s Forum on International Dispute Resolution and became home to the new Masters’ Pathway in International Dispute Resolution. In July 2016, the TLI will host an international conference, Jessup’s Bold Proposal, to mark the 60th year of publication of Philip Jessup’s groundbreaking lectures on Transnational Law at Yale Law School.

Since its creation, the TLI has been offering a meeting place for training, reflection and collaboration among undergraduate, LL.M., PhD students and Faculty. It hosts a number of research groups, the TLI Think! Paper Series with the Social Science Research Network and welcomes visiting scholars and professors from around the world to spend time at the Institute.
